Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, understanding the global appeal and the holistic benefits of yoga, proposed the idea of dedicating a day to this ancient practice.
The proposal received overwhelming support, with 177 UN member states co-sponsoring the resolution, a record number for any UNGA Resolution. On December 11, 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as International Yoga Day. The resolution recognized yoga’s role in promoting health, harmony, and peace, both within individuals and in the world at large.
International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on June 21st. In 2025, it falls on Saturday, 21st June 2025. The official theme for International Yoga Day 2025 is “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”
This theme underscores the intrinsic connection between individual well-being and the planet’s health. Yoga cultivates balance, not only within ourselves but also in our interaction with the natural world.
